A Brief History of Hats & Fascinators

It was in the late 17th century that women's headwear began to emerge in its own right and not to be influenced by men's fashions.

The word "milliner", a maker of women's hats; was first recorded in 1529 when the term referred to the products for which Milan and other northern Italian regions were well known, i.e. ribbons, gloves and straws.

The haberdashers who imported these highly popular straws were called Milaners from which the word was eventually derived. By the mid 1800's Swiss and Italian straws, together with imitation straws made from paper, cardboard, grass and horsehair were available to women, along with the introduction of velvet and tulle.

Lace was also introduced, mostly used as hair caps underneath large flamboyant hats decorated with feathers. Feather fascinators can be attached to very narrow adjustable metal tiara bands colour matched to the individual's hair. Or, if preferred, they can be attached to either narrow or wide metal or clear plastic combs.

Feather Fascinators are extremely comfortable to wear, there is also the added bonus of not spoiling an expensive hair style. Tiaras and "whacky" wired headpieces - again each is individually hand-crafted, so none totally identical.

Each item is produced using either silver-plated or gold-plated tiara bands and wire, metal or glass beads, Swarovski crystals, Swarovski pearls, freshwater pearls, semi-precious stones or a combination of any of the above, colour matched to requirements.

Jewellery is hand-crafted and designed to perfectly complement your tiara, feather fascinator, wedding dress or outfit. Or as a special gift for your bridesmaids or flower-girls. You can commission Anuccia to reproduce one of her many designs to suit your own specific colour requirements, or have an item specifically designed to your own idea.
